84 Contemporary Textile Group

Contemporary textile group – Perth

I became a member of the 84 Contemporary textile group in 2001. Originally the group focused on free machine embroidery. These days, the 84 group embraces a broad range of contemporary and alternative techniques and fibres. Workshop activities are very varied and cover  a range of techniques, materials, tools and design theory. With a membership of around 30, we still have members who were part of the original group in 1984 – hence the name. The Group  celebrated its 30th Anniversary in 2014 which is a source of great pride to current members. There are a few who were part of the fledgling group of ladies who then just wished to ‘Be Creative’ in 1984.

With a number of exhibitions and retreats in recent years, and regular workshops, the group continues to be very active. Despite the modest size of our group, the results have been extraordinary as can be seen by clicking the thumbnails below.

We meet once a month on the 2nd Sunday of each month 9:30am to 3:30pm at Craft House, Clyde Road, Menora, Perth – Western Australia. These meetings usually take the form of a workshop on an aspect of textile or fibre art. This might include topics such as machine and hand stitch techniques, aspects of design, felting, construction, embellishment, fabric dyeing. printing, etc.

We aim to:

  •  In the first place, promote the development of knowledge and skills in the field of contemporary textile art to members.
  •  Also share knowledge and skills in the field of textile art through meetings, workshops and exhibitions.
  •  And lastly, respect the creativity and ideas of members as well as encourage fellowship.
